The weather in Crete

May is maybe the best time of the year to visit Crete, especially if you are interested in hiking and exploring
the island, as the weather is not too hot yet. Crete weather in May is "normally" warm and sunny, much or most of the month. The nights will still be cool. After the winter rains, Crete island is at its greenest and literally carpeted with flowers. April sees the first tourists and is also the time of the Greek easter, the most important feast of
the year giving you the best opportunity to experience the hospitality of traditional Crete. Rainfall is quite unlikely after mid-May. May is one of the best months (as is September) for comfortable outdoor activities and walks, blessed with natural scents and flowers. Weather wise at May in Crete, expect daytime temps of mid to high 20s.

The weather in Crete is very much affected by local topography. There are three mountain ranges with heights
up to 2457 metres (approx 8000 feet). However the ranges are all different, The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in the west are the most impressive with very steep sides and lots of high rocky peaks. The central range has the highest peak on Crete (Ida or Psiloritis) but it does not appear so dramatic as the summit is surrounded by more gentle rolling hills. The Eastern range (Dikti) is less high and is less likely to induce rain. Sea temperatures around Crete are generally warm, and bathers can swim comfortably from May right up to November. The water remains above 20 ºC during these months, peaking at 25 ºC in high summer. The sea temperature around Crete beaches will drop to about 15 ºC in February before beginning to warm again with the onset of spring.
Crete's weather is changeable from year to year, especially in the "shoulder" months April to June and October to November. The only remedy is to bring (heavier luggage!) a variety of clothing on your trips to Crete
