CLIMATE & WEATHER CONDITIONS IN CRETE GREECE
Crete and its 300 days of sunshine enjoys one of the healthiest climate in Europe. The Mediterranean climate//weather prevails in most regions of the Crete island while in winter months there is substantial snowfall
in the highest mountainous regions. Rainfall is also substantial. Quite often during summer months a hot wind (Livas) blows. Crete weather is relatively mild, Mediterranean. During the fall and winter months north and northwest winds dominate, while in the summer the ill winds make it enjoyable. But the divine gift of the eternal sunshine allows one to start their vacation from March and end it at the end of October. Tourists often decide on their vacation spot depending on the climate and weather in Crete (Greece). The southern and eastern regions of Crete (Creta) tend to be warmer and drier than areas in mid, western and northern areas of the island.

Heraklion is the largest urban centre in Crete, capital of the region Heraklio and the economic centre of the
island. The first European civilisation, the Minoan civilisation, flourished on this land 5000 years ago. The Region of Chania, due to its natural beauty and variety of sights, attracts many tourists from all over the world. Concerning the south side of Crete towards the Libyan sea it presents the biggest amount of sunlight in Europe.

THE WEATHER IN CRETE MONTH BY MONTH
January | February | March | April | May | June | Jujy | August | September | October | November | December
From June and August, the weather in Crete is reliably at its hottest and temperatures stay anywhere
between 28°C and 40°C, although the mercury in the thermometer is known to rise much high when the weather is especially sunny, although the odd strong wind can have a rapid cooling effect. The summer nights are warm,
but not usually uncomfortable. Crete's weather in Autumn: September enjoys great weather and can really be classed as a summer month, since daytime temperatures in Crete island are frequently in the high 20s and
the thermometer never falls much below the high teens. The month also enjoys an excellent 11 sunshine hours per day. Autumn rains usually start (sporadically) from October / November onwards. The feeling is much
like spring, except that the fields are now brown and the sea is still warm from summer. Another characteristic of Crete is the fact that the sea temperatures in the southern coast during the winter are the same as the sea temperatures in northern Europe in the summer. Winter swimming has gained in popularity in recent years |

weather observed in Heraklion Crete
The winter's weather in Crete , like in most Greek iskands, can best be described as mild but wet. A mixture
of bright, warm days interspersed with long periods of heavy rain, sometimes horizontal with Beaufort 8+ winds. Day temperatures around Crete are usually 10-20°C, although it can feel a lot colder in the wind and rain, and at night it can sometimes dip as low as 5°C. Winter in Crete can be quite wet, most of the yearly rainfall occurs between October and February. It is also a windy time to and winter months can see a fair amount of stormy weather. South Crete has a warmer weather / climate than North part of Crete: higher temperatures, less wind and rain |
