In the last years, many things have changed in Georgioupolis. The once small village with its 9 km long sandy beach enticed the first "do it yourself" holiday makers, who found a few rooms available in the village. The beach is busy with people enjoying the sand, the sea, and a drink at the beach bars. Idyllic places around the rivers and marshy areas can still be found despite the increase in construction.
Today the travel-boom has changedthe life of the residents and tourists keep them very busy for six months of the year. Then they are alone again for a short winter season. Then once again, Georgioupolis village comes to life with residents and tourists meeting in the cafe-bars, ouzeries, restaurants and tavernas. Impressive and beautiful scenery is backed by the panorama of the White Mountains. The vine, olive and cypress landscape with its small mountain villages is lovely for a day's excursion around Georgioupolis and Chania.
At georgioupolis, each summertime, most of the total ammount of permanent residents, devote to the service of visitors: the famous Cretan Hospitality, finds here her absolute transubstantiation. This, is only one from the reasons where thousands people, all over the world, are coming back to us each year, full of nostalgia. Historical elements for the season are presented by the minoan ages. The excavations revealed a grave of minoan type at Kastello and discoveries of religion spaces in the cavern "Korakia'". Archaeological localities have been found also in the south regions of Georgioupolis settlement, where was located the ancient "Amfimalla", easternly the settlement Dramion (ancient Ydramia or Ydramio).
Georgioupolis is crossed by rivers. The rivers create water biotopes and inbetween takes shape the only natural lake of Crete, the southern of Europe, Lake of Koyrnas. At length of gulf, is extended one of the bigger beaches of island, length of 6 km. A splendid alternation of landscapes, that justifies day-long tours. Many of these regions are protected ecotopes and have been proposed for integration in the environmental net In the biotopes of Georgioupolis, they have been recorded up to nowadays 174 species of birds: some of them live here as permanent, other rest on their way to immigration and other pass the winter. Birds as the herons, the cormorants, the swans, the widgeons, the rednecks and the wagtails, meet themselves so much in estuaries of rivers and the beach as well as in the lake, giving occasion for observation. |
